A Better Email Update to Venture Investors

Venture capital firms get a lot of email updates from software companies. Here is how to make yours stand out.

Keep it short. If your email requires lots of scrolling or is particularly dense, it’s likely to get archived quickly. Everyone is busy so keep it quick and write like a CEO. It should be no more than 6 sentences and a few bullets.

Open with a refresher. Because investors receive many update emails from startups either quarterly or even monthly, open with two sentences on what you do and include a link to your website.

Provide the numbers. Next, bullet out some data. The most important are ARR, YOY growth, NDR and GDR. The more data you can provide, the better. Do you have a chart you can put next to the data of ARR? If so, do that.

The qualitative. Provide 3 sentences on what you’re seeing in the business, how you did, and your general outlook. If you’re raising soon, include that.

The ask. Ask for something. The easiest for most VC to fulfill are intros to talent or even advice. Investors love giving advice and feel engaged when you ask.

Remember the goal of the email update is to stay fresh enough to the investor so that when you are raising capital, they’ll remember you. The secondary goal is to get something that could help you now (that’s what ‘The ask’ is for). Keep is short, impactful, and you’ll not only stay fresh but also come across as thoughtful, direct, efficient, and intentional. Those are all great qualities investors look for.
